RAM BOPS come in two main versions, seal RAM and Shear RAM.
A seal RAMs is equipped with inserts that fit their purpose.
A pipe-ram is equipped with an insert that seals to the body-diameter of your drill pipes. The diameter of the inserts can’t be used for any other diameter and needs to be replaced for other diameters.
A blind RAMs has the same characteristics as the pipe RAM apart from the fact that the inserts can only seal to each other, with no drilling tools in the well. Serious damages can occur on the seals if attempted to close the RAMs while something is in the way.
Shear RAMs purpose is to close the well, no matter what. This means it has booster chambers on the hydraulics, giving the rams more closing force. With this boosted force it is capable of, in combination with special shearing inserts, to cut whatever is in the well and seal it off.
